If you find yourself in the same place as many other Australians – preparing for retirement – but don’t really know what to do with yourself, then you may have considered moving into a retirement resort. However, many people don’t actually know what a retirement resort is. You may think that it is a place for senile old people to go and be cared for until they die, sort of like a nursing home. Alternatively, you may think that it is somewhere that rich people retire to (it is a ‘resort’ after all!). Well, I am here to tell you that you would be very, very wrong in both assumptions. A retirement resort is somewhere that you can go and live when the rigours of everyday life get too much. If you decide to live in one, you will find yourself involuntarily placed into a small community where everybody cares for each other and interacts in a stimulating and enjoyable environment.
They allow you to associate freely with like-minded people:
Are you a retired tradie who enjoy reminiscing about days on the job? Tech designer who still keeps up with the latest computer trends? Whatever your field, interests, and hobbies, a retirement resort will allow you to connect with like-minded people. You will find yourself becoming more and more engaged with other people, and will probably come to enjoy the company they offer.
While still retaining your freedom and self-sufficiency:
Retirement resorts are NOT like nursing homes. You will retain your own independent living area, allowing you to take time out when you need to and offering you the privacy that nursing homes do not. Don’t be afraid of losing your freedom just because you are moving into a retirement resort!
