Helping to improve young people's lives

GEMLIFE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUTH CHARITY LIFECHANGER, HOSTED A MENTOR TRAINING SESSION AT THE GEMLIFE GOLD COAST SALES CENTRE ON 28 MAY.

Homeowners and contract holders from GemLife Gold Coast and Tweed Waters learned skills to work within school settings that will help improve young people’s mental health and resilience as well as providing the toolkit to assist mentoring younger people in their own lives.

GemLife has a three-year partnership with LifeChanger, which is dedicated to empowering young people to lead fulfilling lives through programs that support their social, emotional, and resilience skills.

Homeowner Candy Hardy said with a new grandchild expected later this year, she thought it was a good opportunity to pick up new skills that could benefit her own grandchildren.

When the newest grandchild is born, Candy will have ten grandchildren all under the age of 11!

“If they ever need my help with something one day, that they don’t feel comfortable talking to their parents about and I can help them, then that’s only a good thing,” she said.

“My biggest takeaway was that it’s important to talk to a young person without being accusatory toward them, support them to achieve their goals, and to not feel discouraged,” she said.

Following the training, Candy is also considering signing up for the schools’ program to help young people in need of mentorship and to empower students to champion their own health and wellbeing.

“The session was well run, and GemLife put on a beautiful lunch. I think it’s amazing that Adrian and GemLife support homeowners to take part in these events,” she said.

Candy’s neighbour Dianne Ruehland, who has a background working for crisis lines, said she was glad she went with Candy to the LifeChanger workshop.

“LifeChanger’s programs are a good way to reach kids, and they do a good job,” Dianne said.

Once residents and homeowners receive accreditation for working with children, the next step is to go into schools should they wish to.

If making a positive difference in the lives of young people is something close to your heart, keep an eye out for the next GemLife LifeChanger training workshops.
