Tai Chi exercises a hit at Woodend

GEMLIFE WOODEND RESIDENTS ARE SEEKING TO IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH AND WELLBEING BY TAKING PART IN THE `SOFT’ MARTIAL ART FORM OF TAI CHI.

Originating in Ancient China, Tai Chi involves a series of gentle, graceful movements designed to exercise the body and clear the mind. Since the introduction of weekly classes at GemLife Woodend a few months ago, increasing numbers of enthusiastic residents have joined.

Tai Chi instructor Helen Simmons said the idea is to keep the body moving.

“As we get older, we have to be more proactive with keeping the joints and body moving and well serviced, and Tai Chi is the perfect way to do it,” she said.

“I teach Tai Chi Qigong Shi Ba Shi, which means 18 health exercises as well as Tai Chi 8 Form which is a type of martial arts for beginners. We do all the basics and warmups because it is those exercises that continue to give ongoing benefits by incorporating stretching, balance and moving all the joints.”

The first couple to move into the resort, Doreen and Danny Green, regularly attend the classes and say they are benefiting greatly from the activity.

“We joined the Tai Chi class to help with balance, breath control and more, and found it has also assisted with better coordination. It’s not hard to do the exercises and those taking part can adjust the routine to suit their own abilities and circumstances. We are not great at sports, but Tai Chi is something anyone can do,” said Doreen.

GemLife Woodend Resort Manager Leanne Boxshall agreed, adding: “It’s amazing how quickly you can benefit from regular Tai Chi classes.”

Helen and her enthusiastic students are looking forward to taking the classes, held on Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, outdoors in the country club alfresco area where they can enjoy the fresh air and warmer spring and summer weather.
