Mateship a valued part of GemLife Highfields

THE SPIRIT OF MATESHIP IS THRIVING AT GEMLIFE HIGHFIELDS OVER-50S LIFESTYLE RESORT.

International Men’s Day is being held on Saturday, 19 November and to celebrate the day, we are shining a light on some of the resort’s mates.

This year’s theme aims to highlight the role mateship plays in helping men live longer, better and healthier lives which is something Wade Jensen, who is involved in getting residents together for tennis, table tennis and pickleball, greatly supports.

“Mateship is a big part of all our activities because, while we love to play, the experience is more about getting together, having a chat, sharing knowledge about our many interests ranging from cars to sports, supporting each other when needed and just relaxing,” said Wade.

Fellow resident Nick Smith said that maintaining friendships with mates was tremendously important, particularly for the support it provided and the outlet it gave men to be themselves, talk about topics of shared interest, and learn from each other.

“On Friday nights we often come together for drinks at the country club. All the girls will hook up and often the men will meet around the barbecue for a chat. We’re all mates and we continually learn from each other, share experiences and have fun. That’s what life is all about,” said Nick.

Another keen pickleball and pool player at GemLife Highfields, Ken Kiehne, says he is a private person but enjoys catching up with mates to share stories, exchange banter and have a bit of fun.

“You can be yourself with mates and everyone accepts each other just as we are, with no expectations. I do love a drink with the boys after a round of golf!”
