IT’S TIME TO GET IN THE SADDLE AND PEDAL YOUR WAY TO QUEENSLAND’S MOST POPULAR CHARITY CYCLING EVENTS, ROTARY RIDE THE RANGE, COMING UP NEXT MONTH ON SUNDAY, 9 OCTOBER.

With just five weeks to go, this is the perfect time to start training for the big ride. Optimise your training and performance with these nine beginner tips to help you slowly but surely be prepared for the challenge.

1. Be realistic

Choose a distance you know you can achieve. While it’s good to push yourself, it’s best not to set unrealistic goals and force your body past your limit.

2. Proper bike fit

Training puts stress on the body, so it is essential that your seating position on your bike helps you ride comfortably and reduces injury risk.

3. Gear up

You don’t have to kit up like a pro, but padded cycling shorts are essential. Stick with moisture-wicking fabrics and use layers so you can adjust for weather conditions. Remember to always wear a helmet.

4. Be prepared

Make yourself familiar with the course so there are no surprises on the day of the event. If possible, bike along the same path prior to
the event so you have more confidence in conquering the ride.

5. Practise makes perfect

While training, be sure to get out in multiple group rides so you will be used to riding among other riders at high speeds and in tightly packed groups.

6. Bike check

Give your bike a thorough check-over a day before the race.

7. Take it easy

It is worth having a gentle spin on the day before your race to keep the body ticking and fire up those muscles which you will be using in the race the next day.

8. Fuel up

Be sure you have all your water bottles filled and your energy bars and gels ready the night before.

On the morning of the event, try to eat breakfast at least two hours before the race. Have something containing carbohydrates and some protein. Don’t forget to keep hydrated as well.

9. Have fun

It’s your first cycling race so don’t put pressure on yourself to win – enjoy the ride!
