Lure of fishing has Colin hooked

GEMLIFE RAINBOW BEACH HOMEOWNERS WILL BE IDEALLY LOCATED IN AN AREA KNOWN FOR BEING AMONG THE MID NORTH COAST’S MOST POPULAR FISHING AND BOATING DESTINATIONS.

Local fishermen are spoilt for choice with great spots for deep sea, beach, rock, estuary and freshwater fishing, a fact embraced by future GemLife Rainbow Beach resident Colin King who first moved into the area in 2014.

“I grew up in Victoria and from a very young age loved to throw a line in at Apollo Bay. The fabulous fishing at Lake Cathie was one of the reasons my partner Annie and I made the move interstate, and we are so glad we did,” said Colin.

The amateur fisherman can be seen almost every day with his fishing rod and bucket on picturesque Rainbow Beach where, he says, the fishing is great.

“It is a top spot for bream, whiting and flathead especially at this time of year and I rarely, if ever, go home empty-handed,” he said.

While fishing on the beach, Colin enjoys the quiet time as well as the local scenery which includes whales and dolphins swimming off shore.

He also enjoys socialising and having a chat to other fishermen or beach visitors and says of the sport: “ Once you have thrown a line in, you get hooked on it.”

Twice a year, major competitions including Port Macquarie’s Golden Lure Fishing Contest and the Lake Cathie Amateur Fishing Club’s Annual Charity Fish Auction, see an influx of local and interstate fisherman to the area.

Club secretary Terry McDermott said the event is free to enter and participants can win great prizes. The fish they catch is then auctioned off to aid local charities with over $100,000 raised over the past decade.

“We would love to see fishing enthusiasts from the new GemLife Rainbow Beach over-50s resort join our club, which holds monthly competitions as well as fishing against other clubs on the Mid North Coast every few months.”
