Firing up fitness - Experienced personal trainer joins the GemLife team

THE FIRST QUESTION FOR THE NEW ASK JOSH COLUMN COMES FROM GEMLIFE HOMEOWNER MICHEL PARENTY FROM GEMLIFE MAROOCHY QUAYS. MICHEL IS 85 YEARS OLD AND KEEN TO GET HIMSELF FIT AND IN SHAPE WITH A REGULAR EXERCISE ROUTINE.

Hi Michel,

Thank you for reaching out to me about getting physically active at GemLife’s gym facilities! It’s great to hear that you are interested in keeping yourself fit and healthy, and I am excited to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Firstly, I recommend consulting your doctor before beginning any new exercise program, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions. Your doctor can help determine what types of exercises to do and what precautions should be taken.

GemLife understands the importance of staying active during retirement. We offer a range of resort-style facilities, including state-of-the-art gym facilities to give homeowners the tools they need to succeed. When starting out, it’s important to take things slowly and gradually increase intensity and duration of workouts. Listen to your body and adjust intensity as needed, be sure to stay hydrated and fuel your body with healthy foods to support your exercise program.

When starting training at 85, incorporating low-intensity bodyweight exercises will help build strength and improve overall physical function. Bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks can be performed with high repetitions to promote muscle endurance and strength. Starting with 2-3 sets of 10-12 reps of bodyweight movements and 2-3 sets of 20-60 second isometric movements will build strength and endurance.

Low-intensity machine work can also be incorporated into a strength training routine. Leg extensions, chest press, and pulldown machines provide controlled movements and adjustable resistance, making them a safe and effective way to build strength.

Over time, the weight and number of sets can be gradually increased to continue challenging the muscles. It’s important to use proper form and technique and properly adjusted machines for an individual’s size. Listen to your body and adjust your exercise routine as needed to prevent injury.

Consistency is key, so it’s important to make strength training a regular part of your routine. Aim to work out at the gym a few times a week for shorter sessions, to help build momentum and maintain progress.

I hope this information helps you get started on your fitness journey and I wish you all the best in achieving your health and wellness goals.

Please note that our new GemLife Gym Induction sessions will be rolling out soon. These inductions will cover gym etiquette, equipment usage, and safety protocols to ensure that you can use our facilities with confidence.
