Woodend team set to bowl over all opposition

LOOK OUT QUEENSLAND, TEAM WOODEND IN VICTORIA HAS ITS EYES SET ON BOWLING OVER ALL CHALLENGERS AT THE INAUGURAL GEMLIFE GAMES ON 8 SEPTEMBER.

“To be honest, we are actually looking forward to having fun and meeting GemLife residents from the other resorts, but having a win along the way would be the icing on the cake,” said GemLife Woodend team coordinator Susan Doyle.

She admits getting their team of eight lawn bowlers together was a slow task, but it has all come together now.

“We’ve also got two reserves and an umpire,” she said.

While having fun is the primary goal, Susan says their team has some talented bowlers amongst them.

“My husband Shane and I used to play indoor lawn bowls when we lived in New Zealand, but I don’t play as much now, although five of our Woodend team members play social bowls every Thursday as well as competing in local club competitions in town, which is great practise for the GemLife Games,” said Susan.

Susan should not be underestimated, however, because she maintains an active lifestyle and likes to keep fit. She works out at the gym and participates in the Run the Rock event in the Macedon Ranges region’s Hanging Rock every year.

GemLife Woodend will also be fielding teams in pool, table tennis and ten-pin bowling at the GemLife Games, which Susan has described as a great initiative.

“The games is a great way to bring us all (from the various resorts) together. It not only boosts our friendship circles but also gives us a chance to see other resorts within the broader GemLife community,” said Susan.

“Many of the GemLife Games participants, including us, are also being hosted by GemLife Maroochy Quays homeowners and that is another thing we are really looking forward to. Hopefully we can return the favour one day!”
