Stepping it up! Walk your way to health and fitness

RETIRED GOVERNMENT SURVEYOR, MICHAEL TURNER, LIKES NOTHING BETTER THAN LISTENING TO TRUE CRIME PODCASTS WHILE WALKING AN AVERAGE OF TEN KILOMETRES A DAY TO KEEP FIT AND HEALTHY.

“I used to run a little when I first started about 20 years ago, but I prefer to walk these days. I’ve built up from about 3 to 4 kilometres to 10 to 15 kilometres a day, and I’ve reaped the benefits by maintaining a healthy weight of 80 kilos. I’ve never felt fitter, although my wife, Gayla, thinks I’m too skinny,” said Michael.

In addition, Upper Coomera-based Michael puts on his walking shoes and ear pods every couple of weeks and heads to the new GemLife Gold Coast resort development at Pimpama where he and Gayla are contract holders in Stage One.

“I like to check on the progress and can see our block through the fence. There is no better time than when you are walking in the fresh air to start thinking about what lays ahead for us at what is set to be an amazing resort … and I can see it all happening before my eyes.”

Michael admits he has a very non-competitive interest in maintaining a healthy walking routine, although he has taken part in a few fun runs and running/walking events in the past, including last year’s Gold Coast Running Festival with the GemLife Gold Coast team.

“I jogged a little but mostly walked the 10 kilometres section. It’s a good thing I’m not competitive because I pretty much came last,” he quipped.

What did come out of taking part in the event however, said Michael, was the chance to meet fellow GemLife Gold Coast contract holders who had competed in the 5 kilometres section, with many new friendships formed.

“That is one of the best things about going into a competition in which you all share an interest. We have since met up many times and are getting to know who our neighbours will be before we even move into our beautiful new home,” said Michael.

He said Pimpama can provide walkers with some hilly terrain, but the hills are good for the heart. Another great location not far away is in Upper Coomera which hosts a lovely lake to walk around.

“I actually don’t mind where I walk. There is always something new to see and you never know what might be around the corner. But the main thing is that you are doing something that is good for your health and fitness and is not hard to do. I recommend everyone give it a try, even if they only walk one or two kilometres a day!”
