Pickleball power - New craze is one for all generations

PICKLEBALL IS THE LATEST CRAZE TO HIT GEMLIFE OVER-50S LIFESTYLE RESORTS AND, LIKE THE HOMES IN THESE POPULAR COMMUNITIES, THE SPORT IS ATTRACTING MULTI GENERATIONAL INTEREST.

It’s a trend that is gaining in momentum, according to GemLife Rainbow Beach contract holder and self-professed pickleball fanatic Kelvin Hale.

“Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the USA, and it is starting to take off here now. It’s so easy to play, it’s a very social game, and ideal for all ages,” said Kelvin, who is a qualified pickleball coach.

Kelvin, who took up the sport four years ago while living in Queensland, loves the fact that GemLife has provided purpose-built pickleball courts at its over-50s resorts, including GemLife Rainbow Beach where his mother (and biggest supporter) has also purchased a home.

“GemLife caters for multi-generations in all its resorts, especially in regard to the many facilities they provide. We watched the pickleball court take shape and are really looking forward to having a hit with other residents once we have moved in.”

Kelvin’s involvement in the sport has seen him make many friends. He has had a few wins along the way while also learning a great deal about the game’s rules and strategies, as well as its many benefits.

The pickleball court is about half the size of a tennis court which Kelvin says is great for many players, especially the over-50s, because it means less running.

“The game itself is more about knowing where to place the ball strategically for the best result. You could call it a game of tactics,” said Kelvin.

He said it is played with a plastic ball with holes in it and paddles that look very much like a large table tennis bat which makes playing the game so much easier and less strenuous.

“There are many benefits to playing pickleball. It simulates the brain, helps keep us active and fit, is a great social event and can be played by the entire family from kids to great grandparents.”

Kelvin, who plays up to three times a week in the 60-70 age group, has a pickleball skill rating of 3.5 (ratings vary from 1.0 for beginners to 6.0+ for top professional pickleball players).

“Having a rating allows me to compete at tournaments and against other pickleball clubs and groups in my age bracket. I practice two or three times a week and recently competed in a tournament in Taree which attracted about 40 other enthusiasts,” said Kelvin who added “but not everyone wants to play in competitions.”

He estimates about 50 percent of people who play the sport just want to have a hit for fun and to keep fit.

“One of the great things about having pickleball courts at GemLife resorts is that they are not only great for residents but also their children and grandchildren. It’s something all ages can enjoy when they come to visit,” he said.
