How to have an epic retirement

How to have an epic retirement

A LACK OF ACCESSIBLE AND CREDIBLE INFORMATION ABOUT FINANCE AND LIFESTYLE OPTIONS FOR OVER 60S STARTED AUTHOR AND COMMENTATOR BEC WILSON ON A LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY

“I started ten years ago when my parents turned 60 and I realised that there wasn’t a lot of quality information available for people in that age group,” she said.

“What there was in terms of blogs was written from personal experiences rather than offering a more general resource. I started seeking out that information myself and that’s when Starts at 60 was born.”

The news and advice website, Starts at 60, rapidly expanded to include a travel arm called Travel at 60. Ten years on, Bec has started a new venture that includes the release of her first book How to have an Epic Retirement.

While there is no shortage of material available on the internet about the financial side of retiring, Bec noted that it was often complex and didn’t take a holistic approach to the subject.

“There’s more to retirement than simply no longer going to work,” she said. “The generation who are now moving towards retirement are also looking for modern ways to retire, and that is the focus of my book.

“I want How to have an Epic Retirement to be a one-stop resource.”

Bec identified six pillars that over 50s should consider and actively be planning for:

  • Time
  • Finance
  • Health
  • Happiness and fulfillment
  • Travel
  • Home and downsizing

The final pillar is the focus of Bec’s presentation at GemLife’s Over-50s Lifestyle Forum.

“This should be part and parcel of your decision on the lifestyle you want to enjoy after you retire,” said Bec.

“For younger, more active people a land lease community lifestyle resort like GemLife is increasingly popular because of the facilities and the lock-up-and-leave convenience for travels.

“I’m looking forward to speaking more about the subject on the day.”

Bec said this generation of over-60s are approaching life and retirement differently.

“They’re not doing things in the same way their parents and grandparents did,” she says. “They really do want an epic retirement and they have more opportunity and information available than ever before.

“Retirement is a complex subject, and it can be difficult to find exactly what you need and that’s where my book and free online resources can help.”
