EIGHT MONTHS AGO, GEMLIFE MAROOCHY QUAYS HOMEOWNER EMANUEL CONTI STARTED THE OVER-50S LIFESTYLE RESORT’S FIRST TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS GROUP WHICH HAS SINCE BECOME A HUGE HIT WITH RESIDENTS.
The popular indoor racquet sport that dates back to 19th century England has been an interest of Emanuel’s since he was a young boy, and for the past 15 years, he has played competitively with a group at Bribie Island.
When he moved to GemLife Maroochy Quays, he was keen to find others who enjoyed the game.
“There wasn’t a table tennis group here, so I advertised it and invited other residents to join in. We started with just a few of us playing singles, and now it has grown so much that we play doubles as well and have two sessions a week to cater for everyone,” said Emanuel.
All skill levels are welcome to attend the sessions which not only provide a chance to get physically fit, but also have fun doing it. And for anyone who is new to the sport, Emanuel is on hand to provide some points on everything from serving to hitting the ball.
“Many people have very few skills when they start, but they soon learn, and we’ve seen great improvement from everyone who gets involved.”
Emanuel said other benefits of playing table tennis include the fact it is played inside, out of the sun, and in air-conditioned comfort, making it a very pleasant experience for everyone.
The table tennis group meets in the Country Club’s games room on Mondays from 2 to 4pm and Wednesdays from 10 to noon.
