Express Yourself – David makes waves with a stylish new look

LOOKING TO CRUISE INTO A BRAND-NEW LOOK AHEAD OF A LONG-AWAITED HOLIDAY, DAVID CROCKETT FROM GEMLIFE WOODEND, TURNED TO LIVING PROOF’S FASHION STYLIST AND IMAGE CONSULTANT TASHA HOMAN.

In this month’s episode of Living Proof by GemLife, David is looking forward to leaving COVID hibernation to enjoy a cruise vacation with wife Cheryl, and wants a holiday wardrobe to suit.

The gregarious David is the life and soul of the party, but his wardrobe was filled with more beige than brilliant colours, so he was a natural choice for Tasha’s discerning eye.

David conceded that many jackets in his wardrobe were reefer styles that dated back to the 1970s.

“I was really interested in the clothes Tasha showed me – the type of things that young guys in their 20s and 30s are wearing now, particularly jackets that are left open and don’t button up,” he said.

“Still, I’m going to hang on to some of my old jackets, you’ll never know when they’ll come back into fashion again!”

Despite being the first time in front of the camera, David was a natural, so it’s no surprise to learn that he’s often front and centre organising entertainment at GemLife Woodend – including arranging a recent concert event featuring veteran entertainer Issi Dye.

“We’ve got a really great community with lots of ideas, and I help turn those ideas into shows,” he said.

When not GemLife Woodend’s resident impresario, David, a retired dentist and Vietnam veteran, also plays guitar and is a published author with five crime novels under his belt.

But David’s great passion is cricket and GemLife Woodend has a growing cricket team.

“We’re not quite ready to field a First XI, but we’re growing with a lot of dedicated players,” he said.

David’s wife Cheryl said they both enjoyed filming the segment for Living Proof by GemLife.

“It certainly gave us a greater appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes to film the reality shows we see on television,” she said. Cheryl encourages David’s active schedule.

“The more he does, the less I have to do,” she joked. “One of the biggest appeals of living at GemLife Woodend is being so close to family. My daughter lives across the road and it’s wonderful to have her and the grandchildren so close.”

In addition to travel, Cheryl and David enjoy their active social life including regular happy hours, dinner parties and raffles at the country club.

“It’s the lovely neighbours that makes living at GemLife so enjoyable,” she said.

One of the questions Tasha asks on the Living Proof series is why, for so many people, their personality isn’t reflected in their wardrobe.
