Express Yourself - Breaking the activewear cycle

WHEN FUTURE GEMLIFE GOLD COAST CONTRACT HOLDER KAY WILSON WANTED TO DITCH THE GYM GEAR FOR A BRAND-NEW MAKEOVER, SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE WAS IN FOR.

This month, Living Proof’s tenth episode of Express Yourself has fashion-brand creator, personal stylist and segment host, Angela Cleary, giving Kay a complete makeover transformation, helping her reclaim her style with a couture shakeup.

Kay, a retired schoolteacher of 41 years and walking enthusiast, spends most of her time in gym gear. Stuck in a fashion rut, she was keen to make an impression at her big reveal, especially with some of her family travelling to attend.

“My daughter and her husband came down for my special reveal, and my husband was there too so it was very important to me. I really wanted to impress!” she said.

Kay loves lots of colour, dresses and anything fun, so Angela incorporated these ideas into her makeover and selected three outfits for Kay to choose from to help her break the activewear cycle.

“Activewear has become the new street style, and it’s certainly a fashion statement within itself, but you can easily get yourself in a style rut,” Angela said.

“Three top tips to avoid this is to go through your closet and have a really good purge, book an appointment with your hairdresser for a revamped hairstyle, and next time you shop, select three items you would never ordinarily consider, try them on and just have fun with it,” she said. “That’s exactly what we have done with Kay.”

Angela used some daring techniques to transform Kay’s style.

“Lifting her hair off her face and giving her a side part changed things up a little from her regular style, and really showed off her beautiful eye makeup,” Angela said.

“When choosing a bold print, opt for a neutral or black background and contrast this with one bold colour,” she said. “This technique worked perfectly with Kay.”

When it was time for the reveal, Kay was taken aback at the transformation.

“The hair was so different to what I am used to – I was in shock, but a really good shock. I didn’t peek, even once, through my whole makeover,” Kay said.

“I wasn’t sure of my hair at first but the amazing reaction from my friends and family made me realise I can pull off this kind of hairstyle and I thought, ‘wow’.

“The outfit that I chose in the end was one I could wear to a lunch or dinner, or even a wedding, so I will get a lot of use out of it, and it felt so lovely on. I was pleasantly surprised with the whole transformation and my husband couldn’t stop looking at me,” she said.

Kay plans to maintain her new look and hairstyle with the help of her daughter-in-law.

“She’s a hairdresser and has promised to help me redo the hair for special occasions, so all I need now is more special occasions.”
