Choreographer and Bribie Island resident Patricia Varga moved to GemLife a year ago and has been on a mission to share the power of dance with her fellow residents ever since.

Since moving to the resort Patricia has started facilitating Love to Dance with Patty, a fun and social dance class where residents embrace all genres of dance, from Latin style dancing to folk dance and even a bit of rock and roll.

“As people get older it’s easy to say things like I’m too fat, or I’m too unfit, or I can’t dance and things like that. Fortunately, GemLife isn’t like that and the ladies here were very keen to give it a go,” said Patricia.

“I call them my showgirls, the class gives them time to do something for themselves and a place to go where they can feel the music and just let loose.”

As a lifelong dancer and choreographer, Patricia is an advocate for the mental and physical benefits of dance.

“It doesn’t matter if your body shape isn’t perfect or you aren’t experienced, that’s not what it’s about. We’re not trying to be ballerinas, we’re here to dance because it’s good for your mind and it’s good for your body,” she said. “Music does something to your psyche, something great happens when you really go for it, even if you’re not the best dancer, no one cares if you’re good or not, everyone is here to enjoy themselves.”

Along with spreading joy, dancing improves strength and muscle function, as well as increases balance and flexibility.

“Dancing is a phenomenal way to stay active. It helps build a strong core and improves your posture, there are so many benefits. It gives people a way to feel fit, strong and happy,” said Patricia.

“We’re always happy for new people to get involved and the class is nothing too serious or too difficult, it’s good fun and it’s good for you!”
