Bake up some doggy treats

HUMANS ARE NOT ALONE WHEN IT COMES TO LOVING THE OCCASIONAL TREAT OR BISCUIT. TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY ON 26 AUGUST, WHY NOT GIVE YOUR SPECIAL FUR BABY A TASTY TREAT BY COOKING UP A DELICIOUS HOME-MADE DOGGY BISCUIT?

They can be made easily using a simple recipe and as few artificial ingredients as possible. GemLife Chef Matt Conquest says these tasty and chewy treats are good for all dogs, possibly even the fussy ones which, lucky for him, he doesn’t have.

Bake up a batch and freeze a few to pull out when you need a good snack to reward your well-behaved canines.

Home-made dog biscuits

Makes 500g

INGREDIENTS

325g whole wheat plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 large egg
40g honey
240g water
250g of smooth 100 percent peanut butter
(be sure it has no additives like Xylitol)

METHOD

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 170 degrees.
  2. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. Dust your bench with some flour and tip out the dough onto the bench.
  4. Lightly knead the dough until smooth.
  5. Dust the dough ball with more flour and roll out the dough with a rolling pin to 10mm thick.
  6. Take your cookie cutter (it can be shaped like a bone, but old Rufus won’t mind if it’s not) and cut out all the dough and place it on a baking tray.
  7. Re-roll the dough and continue cutting out shapes and repeat until all done.
  8. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until they are lightly golden brown.
  9. Cool these puppies on a wire rack and once cool you can give them to your dog (but only if they are on their best behaviour!).

Treats can be stored in an air-tight container and in the fridge. You can freeze them and pull out a few at a time to keep them fresh.
