THERE’S MORE TO EXERCISE THAN POUNDING THE PAVEMENT AND LIFTING WEIGHTS. GEMLIFE HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE COORDINATOR JOSH KRISTENSON REVEALS HOW ADDING STRETCHING EXERCISES INTO YOUR STRENGTH TRAINING ROUTINE CAN SUPERCHARGE YOUR FITNESS.

The secret behind any successful and sustainable fitness routine is motivation and what could be more inspiring than improving your fitness so you can keep up with your grandkids? In this month’s column, I outline how three basic principles can make a big difference to your fitness.

1. Strength and endurance training

Enjoy picking up the grandchildren and participating in their energetic play by adding squats, hip hinge movements such as deadlifts, plus upper body pressing and pulling movements to your exercise routine. These exercises will help improve your strength to make everyday activities like lifting, carrying, and playing with your grandchildren easier and less tiring.

2. Improved joint mobility and flexibility

Yoga and Pilates emphasise stretching and flexibility, which can alleviate joint stiffness and enhance your ability to move freely. Incorporating yoga or Pilates sessions into your routine can greatly improve your joint mobility. As a result, you’ll find it more comfortable to bend down and tie shoelaces, reach for toys on the ground, or even sit on the floor and play games with your grandchildren.

3. Enhanced balance and coordination

Practice balance exercises like single-leg stands, heel-to-toe walking, and yoga poses such as the tree pose to enhance your balance and coordination. This newfound stability helps you navigate uneven terrain, chase after your grandchildren, and engage in activities that require quick movements without feeling unsteady.

By incorporating these practices into your routine, you’re investing in your long-term health and mobility. Maintaining strength, flexibility, and balance as you age will contribute to an active lifestyle that enables you to create lasting memories with your grandchildren.
