On your bike – Cycling for fitness and fun

PHIL COOK IS COMMITTED TO KEEPING FIT AND FINDS NOTHING MORE EXHILIARATING THAN HOPPING ON HIS BIKE AND PEDALLING UP TO 30 KILOMETRES EACH RIDE.

A former coal miner, Phil had given cycling away at one stage but a chance meeting with an old cycling buddy while working at the mines in Blackwater during the 1980s renewed his interest, and today the activity remains an important part of his life.

“I haven’t looked back since then and just love it. Cycling gives me a lot of enjoyment, keeps me fit and is so relaxing,” said the GemLife Highfields homeowner.

In 2019, Phil took part in Toowoomba’s Ride the Range charity cycling event which is open to cyclists from all over Australia.

“That was the year they opened the Toowoomba Bypass. I joined hundreds of cyclists from around Australia and competed in the 58-kilometre category. The event is a great fundraiser and gives entrants a chance to test their individual abilities while also meeting others who love cycling.”

Phil, who rides four times a week, is not the only cycling enthusiast at GemLife Highfields, where keeping fit and active is encouraged with facilities ranging from a swimming pool and gym to tennis courts and so much more.

“Bike riding is a regular activity for many residents with a group of cyclists, new and experienced, meeting each Tuesday for a ride,” said Phil.

Today, the avid cyclist rides a Cell bicycle but says he would one day like to get the light and easy-to-ride carbon fibre bicycle which is ideal for experienced riders.

“The main benefits of this type of bike for non-competitive riders like me is the comfort and smooth ride it provides. It is also lighter, stronger and more durable, and can last a lifetime,” he said.

At 72, Phil said he has come a long way with his cycling since getting his first Huffy bicycle as a teenager and believes others should give it a try.

“Cycling can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I’d recommend they start on a basic model bike until they are sure it is what they really want to do, enter some of the great charity rides like Ride the Range to gain more experience, and take it from there. It has certainly been a great ride for me!”
