We’re fast approaching the time of year when men Australia-wide will follow the time-honoured tradition of taking up their post at the barbie and throw on a few snags (or steaks or prawns for the more adventurous).
That’s right: Australia Day is just around the corner.
The Down-Low on Down Under Day
For anyone new to our island-continent, Australia Day is held every year on 26 January. While it technically commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, most Aussies have formed their own traditions with family and friends for celebrating everyone’s favourite summer public holiday. There are also a variety of community events for you to get involved in.
Highfields Pioneer Village Aussie Day Celebrations
If you’re living at GemLife Highfields (or you’re planning to move in) and you’re looking for a local Australia Day activity with a difference, we suggest you check out the Australia Day celebrations at Highfields Pioneer Village (73 Wirraglen Road).
An annual Aussie Day favourite, the celebrations kick off at 9:30 am with a range of activities, shows and competitions to amuse all ages. This makes it a great event to enjoy with both likeminded friends or with the grandkids – it’s up to you. Entry is by gold coin donation.
Watch the cow milking, sheep shearing, spinning, blacksmithing and silversmithing, or try your hand at whip cracking, damper making, sack races, three-legged races and more. It’s all about having some good old-fashioned Aussie fun with the local community.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Australia Day without a sausage sizzle, so you can also snag a snag at lunch time. Free billy tea and damper will also be available after the 2:00 pm flag raising and Australia Day awards ceremony.
