David and Joan are anticipating their upcoming move into GemLife Bribie Island and are very excited to start their new life in the resort. In this edition, we catch up with the fun-loving couple, David and Joan, as they provide insight into their big move into the neighbourhood.

You are about to move into the resort. What are you most excited about?

We are both really looking forward to moving into our new villa in GemLife Bribie Island and setting up our new home. Having already met quite a few of the residents, thanks to morning teas and social functions, the settling in process should be smooth.

Since coming to Bribie Island we have become involved with the Volunteer Marine Rescue Base, with Joan helping out with social and fundraising functions and David doing work in the radio room. This has helped us meet some wonderful people and also get to know more about Bribie Island, a place we now call home.

Why did you choose GemLife Bribie Island?

We chose Bribie Island for a number of reasons. There is of course lifestyle and climate, but it is also handy to Brisbane where we have family living, including grandchildren. The “Over 50’s Lifestyle” concept caught our attention almost 10 years ago, however at that time we weren’t ready. As time progressed we kept doing our homework and narrowed down our preferences and finally decided on Bribie Island and the GemLife development.

What floor layout did you decide on and why?

Our selected villa is the Wave II, two bedrooms with double garage. The layout suits us as downsizing was one of the main things we were trying to achieve. No more demands of cleaning a big house, mowing lawns, cleaning the pool and that type of thing.

Where did you both move from?

We came to Bribie Island from Trinity Beach, one of the northern beach side suburbs of Cairns in Far North Queensland. Trying the tropics was always on our ‘list’ and we lived in Cairns for just over 6 years having moved there from Albury on the NSW/Vic border.

In our working lives we moved around a bit. David was in the NSW Police for 36 years and retired as an Inspector at Albury, having served at various locations around Sydney and on the Central Coast. Joan has worked at the American Embassy in Canberra, followed by senior secretarial roles with Solicitors and Barristers at law firms in Sydney, NSW Central Coast, Albury and later in Cairns. In Cairns David worked (if you could call it that) in tourism driving tourist coaches showing visitors the wonders of the tropical far north.

What is your favourite pastime?

We have both played a variety of sports during our lives. Joan with her hockey and golf, and David with cricket, golf and has now taken up lawn bowls. One day we may get back into golf having both played off single figure handicaps, we will see. We both enjoy a wine and Joan is an excellent cook, so no doubt there will be some good social evenings with our fellow GemLife residents.
