Fun, friendship and smooth sailing are all part of the over-50s’ lifestyle for pond yachties group, the Salty Sailors, at GemLife Bribie Island’s lakeside resort.
The popular, rapidly growing recreational sport of radio-controlled yachting is anything but kid-stuff – it’s a scaled-down version of the real thing, using the same standards as full-size yachts, except the boats are operated on-shore.
“It’s lots of fun and very laidback. Sure, it gets competitive sometimes but that’s part of the fun too.”
Commodore of the Salty Sailors Lyn Beaven took up the sport 12 months ago quickly learning the ropes from more skilled group members.
“I bought my first boat so my kids and grandkids could muck around with it on the lake when they visited. It took days to make it from the kit and, when I finished, I decided they’re not touching it!” she laughed.
“I had no clue when I started and wouldn’t race them. It took me a couple of months to learn the basics. Now I wear a cap that says: ‘Some girls chase boys, I race them’.”
“It’s social, fun and all about getting together with neighbours for a good time.”
Lyn was one of the first residents to move into GemLife Bribie Island over-50s resort two years ago.
“Honestly, moving here was the best decision I ever made. My friends and family have to book a time to see me because I’m doing so much!”
“Between the sailing, ten-pin bowling, golf, indoor bowls and water aerobics, I’m busier than ever. I love the Bribie location. My kids and grandkids want to move in. It’s that good.”
GemLife Bribie Island’s award-winning country club and surrounding recreational precinct offer first-class facilities, designed to support active and engaged lifestyles.
