A Moatrek trip to New Zealand with friends resulted in a holiday romance that’s lasted over 40 years for GemLife Maroochy Quays residents Wayne and Julie Woods.
Keen travelers, the Woods met by chance in their early 20s at an under 30s’ camping trip and formed an instant connection.
“I was young and just looking to have a good time on my trip and then all of a sudden, bang, I fell in love at first sight,” said Wayne.
“When I got back to Australia I went to visit my family and told them, ‘I’ve met the girl I’m going to marry’.”
“For me it probably happened a little bit later,” said Julie.
“At the time I thought it was just going to be a bit of a holiday romance. But I knew very quickly after returning home that I’d found my soulmate.”
The couple was fortunate to discover they lived nearby to each other, with Wayne living in Brisbane and Julie on the Gold Coast.
Not long after returning from their trip Wayne and Julie got married and Wayne relocated to the Gold Coast.
Forty years later, on their wedding anniversary, the Woods returned to the place where it all began and retraced the footsteps of the trip that changed their lives.
“It was very romantic. For the specific day of our anniversary we booked a cruise to Milford Sound,” said Julie.
“There was lots of snow and waterfalls and it was very very beautiful and to make the whole thing even better we ended up getting snowed in so we got to stay for an extra day.”
In 2021 the couple will celebrate 42 blissful years together, each better than the last, in a marriage that has blessed them with two sons and four gorgeous grandchildren.
“It’s been fantastic, we spend a lot of time together and it never gets old,” said Wayne.
“It all comes down to being soulmates. A lot of the time he knows exactly what I’m thinking and I know what he’s thinking,” said Julie.
