Forging a new path - Couple swap large home for a better lifestyle

Rhonda and Kim Mihaly cannot wait to get into their new home at GemLife Palmwoods later this year and the fact they had to downsize to do it was the furthest thing from their minds.

“We had to downsize but it was to upgrade into a beautiful new home and vibrant community where we can make new friends and experience life at its very best,” said an excited Rhonda, 59.

Once the couple had decided to move to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast to be closer to their son, his wife and three young grandchildren, they set about the process of making it happen.

Unlike some couples who cringe at the thought of downsizing, Rhonda and husband Kim were ready to do whatever it took to make the move into their dream home at GemLife Palmwoods.

“It really wasn’t a big issue for us because we were ready to return to Queensland no matter what. We looked at getting rid of the need to do consistent maintenance and upkeep of a big home as a blessing,” said Rhonda.

“Kim made sure the first things to go were the lawnmower and gardening tools!”

The couple are no strangers to the sunshine state.

“We lived in Brisbane for 25 years but moved to Budgewoi on the Central Coast of New South Wales after one of our two sons died. Our other son stayed on the Sunshine Coast,” said Rhonda.

She said the house at Budgewoi was bigger than needed and included three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a big rumpus room and a good-sized yard.
“Ours was an old house and was at a stage where it needed constant work. When we decided to sell-up and move to Queensland, we added a new roof and solar panels which must have done the trick because it sold in two days for $20,000 more than we thought we would get.”

Rhonda said the worst thing about downsizing was getting rid of the things that were no longer needed.

“It can be difficult to sell second-hand furniture and goods, so it took us a while to work out the best way to get rid of everything. We sold most of it and only kept a few things like our bed base, washing machine, dryer, three-seater lounge suite and kitchenware,” she said.

But even those items may be superseded once their new home at GemLife Palmwoods is completed, according to Rhonda.

“I’ve taken videos of how some of the display homes have been furnished, and it has given me inspiration to get fresh furniture items for our new home.”

Rhonda said the fact that the couple would be new to the area, and faced with the prospect of making friends once again, was the catalyst for buying at GemLife Palmwoods over-50s lifestyle resort.

“We wanted somewhere that had a community spirit, was close to nature and yet only half an hour from the beach which we both love. Palmwoods was perfect. It is also just 20 minutes from our son and his family.”

Kim, an IT teacher, and Rhonda, who grew up at Nambucca Heads, are also looking forward to enjoying the many activities that will be on offer at the resort when complete.

“Another great thing is that our new home will have two-bedrooms plus a multipurpose room so there will be plenty of space for an office and for Kim to enjoy his hobby of building model trains. We can’t wait to start our new life at GemLife Palmwoods.”
