Forever young – Age is a state of mind

Forever young

What do you think when you look in the mirror? Do you see a younger version of yourself in slightly older packaging? Full of life and young at heart, GemLife’s over-50s go-getters continue to prove that age is just a number.

As Paul Simon once said, “You’re only as old as you feel”. Not only are our residents embracing a whole new life, but they are also redefining aging.

Gone are the days when growing old meant slowing down and hanging up your hat. The over- 50s are going ahead full throttle and living life to the fullest. Recent research has shown that the baby boomer generation have shifted gears becoming more active, fitter, healthier and open to new experiences and adventures.

Forever youngLovebirds Emanuel and Joy Conti are dancing into their 70s at GemLife Maroochy Quays, having moved into the resort last month.

It is hard to believe that this power couple only put on their dancing shoes after they turned 50, quickly becoming professional social dancers on international cruises.

“It doesn’t matter what age you are. If you can walk, you can dance!” said Joy.

Newbies at GemLife, the dynamic duo are set to boogie with their fellow residents.

They believe having a positive attitude is the key to happiness.

“Get up, get dressed, smile at people, and wish them a wonderful day. That’ll brighten up your whole outlook on life.”

Forever youngJulie Colett from GemLife Highfields is a talented artist who has taken her hobby of crafting and turned it into a successful business.

The 62-year-old makes artisanal decorative pieces which are displayed and sold at various local shops, markets and crafts shows.

“The main thing is to stay busy. If you have an active mind, you stay young.”

Volunteering at the Toowoomba Base Hospital is another activity that fulfils Julie.

“My role as a ‘guiding star’ is to check patients in for their appointments and escort those who need assistance. I also volunteer on the admin team at Hope Horizons Cancer Wellness Centre.”

Recently retired Patsy Cundi is vivacious and always finding new ways to keep herself occupied.

The GemLife Palmwoods contract holder loves spending time with her grandkids of varying ages – starting from 7 up to 22 years old.

This cool grandma knows how to bond with her grandchildren. “We just went surfing and we do lots of different things together and we always have a blast.” Patsy sees life as a blessing, “I feel very grateful to grow older. I think every day is a bonus. Have a little fun on the way and make the best of it.”
