If you’re a man in the Highfields over 50s community who enjoys a bit of chess, TOMNET’s regular chess events may be exactly what you’re looking for.
TOMNET provides the opportunity for men in their 50s and over to meet other men in the local community in order to build the bonds of good old-fashioned mateship.
And with their regular chess events near Highfields, you can enjoy the fun and mental stimulation chess always brings at the same time.
All Experience Levels Welcome
Whether you’ve been playing for years or you’re a complete beginner, you’re welcome to go and play chess at TOMNET. Join in the fun and socialising as you learn, teach, mentor, improve your game or go head-to-head with a similarly experienced opponent.
Check and Mate
Generally speaking, “mate” isn’t a term you want to hear in the context of chess, but in the context of life, it isn’t so bad. TOMNET’s chess events are as much about making friends as they are about playing chess, so you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the good kind of “mates” while risking a “checkmate” as you play.
Getting There
TOMNET’s Toowoomba centre is located at 223 Hume Street in South Toowoomba. It’s a 15-20 minute drive from the Highfields area, and public transport options are also available, with fairly regular buses running from the morning.
Regular Chess Events
In 2016, TOMNET’s chess events are scheduled to run every Wednesday until the 14th of December. They begin at 9:00 am, and boards are supplied. For more information, or for 2017 dates, you can visit the TOMNET website here.
Who are TOMNET?
“The Older Men’s Network”, TOMNET is a not-for-profit group that supports men through all the different transitions that come during the over 50s stage of life. Their main focus is to create an environment where men can connect with one another to build friendships and feel supported.
In addition to regular chess events, TOMNET runs several other activities and offers many opportunities for volunteering in the local community, including opportunities to mentor disadvantaged youth.
