5 tricks to boost your memory

5 tricks to boost your memory

Eat right

Eating vegetables and healthy fats are well-known to be essential to memory. For an added boost, increase your animal-based omega-3 fat intake (found in fish or krill oil) and reduce omega-6 fats (found in processed vegetable oils).

Exercise

Active living encourages your brain to work at optimum capacity by stimulating nerve cells to multiply, strengthening their interconnections and protecting them from damage. Recent studies mention that regular exercise not only improves blood flow to the brain, but can also help you learn new tasks twice as fast.

Stop multitasking

Research suggests that you need approximately eight seconds to commit a piece of information to your memory. So, if you’re talking on your phone whilst carrying in groceries and you put down your car keys, you’re unlikely to remember where you left them. Less is more!

Sleep

Recent studies suggest that people are 33 per cent more likely to infer connections among distantly related ideas after sleeping, but few realise that their performance has actually improved. Sleep enhances your memories and helps you ‘practice’ and improve your performance of challenging skills.

Play brain games

If you don’t challenge your brain sufficiently with new and surprising information, it eventually begins to deteriorate. By ‘exercising’ your brain, you can counteract this degeneration. Crosswords and Sudoku are very easy ways of having fun and doing this, but there are now new phone apps that can go that step further – Lumosity being the most well-known.
