“One of the best things about living here is being able to lock-up and go with no worries. It makes travel easy,” said Andrew.
The couple, originally from Scotland, moved into GemLife Bribie Island in May last year and travel has become a big part of their new lifestyle. The pair recently returned from a month-long European vacation which saw them travel from Edinburgh and Balletor in Scotland, Portugal, Italy, including the Amalfi Coast, and Spain.
Wandering through centuries-old seaside villages in the Italian Riviera, watching passionate Flamenco dancers in Spain, traditional gondola rides in the canals of Venice and sleeping in a former Medieval monastery in the postcard-perfect town of Assisi were just a few of the many experiences the Youngs’ enjoyed.
“There’s so much history in Europe. It makes you realise how young Australia is in comparison. There’s so much to see and we could’ve easily added a few more weeks,” said Andrew.
One of the couple’s must-sees is Italy’s iconic Cinque Terre, a collection of five coastal fishing villages featuring multi-coloured cascades of houses built into ruggedly steep hills that plunge towards the ocean.
“It’s magical. Our cruise stopped there and we walked up winding pathways to the houses and cafes. The buildings are amazing,” said Carol.
In Portugal’s sprawling capital, Lisbon, the Youngs recommend a trip to the city’s iconic landmark, the Sao Jorge Castle, centrally located atop its highest hill. It’s fortified walls and watchtowers create an imposing presence over the city below and the castle is believed to have been established by the Romans in 200BC.
“The views are stunning from the castle. It’s a city full of beautiful cathedrals. It’s a busy place full of tourists but the locals are friendly and helpful,” said Andrew.
In Spain’s lively, vibrant city of Barcelona, the couple says the world-famous La Sagrada Familia is not-tobe-missed. An unfinished architectural masterpiece by legendary architect Antoni Gaudi, the church is famous for its free-flowing, organic forms and attracts tourists by the thousands. It is regarded as one of the most distinctive and recognisable buildings of all time.
“The queues are miles long but it’s a must! The cathedral is magnificent – the architecture is absolutely amazing. The details, like the figures built into the walls, are incredible,” said Carol.
The couple is already looking ahead to their next travel adventures, with trips to Vanuatu and a South-East Asian cruise slated.
Making use of the resort’s caravan storage, the Youngs recently bought a motor-home and plan to take road-trips across Australia in the new year.
“We live an active, busy life here. We’re having fun and enjoying life,” said Andrew.
